Shua Charity
SHUA is an acronym for Safe House for Unwanted Animals. Started in September 2001, it is a small animal welfare charity staffed by volunteers. They operate a 24 hour emergency helpline when possible, a website for advice and also an emergency rescue and rehabilitation service for stray, sick, injured & unidentified cats & kittens, providing any necessary vet treatment until each animal can be successfully rehomed.
On a monthly basis, vet bills are approx. £1100; food bills approx. £750; litter & waste disposal approx. £330; transportation approx. £330 and the costs of running the charity shop approx. £590. (Then there are utilities bills, cleaning/maintenance, fundraising costs, bedding etc.)
Summer the cat, is one of the worst cases of abuse and neglect that Shua have witnessed. She had a burn, the size of an adult's hand on her back caused by boiling water, very deep wounds under her left armpit caused by the collar she was wearing that had got stuck under her front leg and she was emaciated.
After a great deal of care and love, Summer is now a healthy, happy cat and was adopted by Jacqui, one of the trustees of Shua.
Our Managing Director recently gave up one of her Sundays to lend a hand at the Shua open day, helping to raise awareness of the charity's work and to raise funds.
In the office on Monday morning the team was told "we are going to do something to help these people". This charity does some amazing work and has rescued countless cats and re-homed hundreds over the years they've been operating.
The two brave women who have taken on this daunting task singlehandedly (well, if two people can be singlehanded) are also each holding down full time jobs.
They do get help from willing volunteers but funds are always short. So we have designed The Cat's Whiskers and agreed to donate 80% of the profits to help Shua in their tireless efforts to redress the harm and neglect visited upon our feline friends.
